Since its inception in 1932 by Stanley H. Tevis, the Tevis Family of companies, including Modern Comfort Systems, has been a beacon of quality, affordability, and personalized service. Starting as a representative for Gulf Oil, Stanley H. Tevis laid the foundation of what would become a remarkable journey in Westminster, MD. His venture into selling gasoline, heating oil, and diesel fuel marked the beginning of a long-lasting relationship with the residents of Carroll County and its surrounding farming communities.
A Partnership Across Generations
The post-war era saw rapid expansion under the stewardship of Stan Jr., who, after serving valiantly in World War II, joined forces with his father to broaden their horizons. Their partnership, symbolized by the formation of “S.H. Tevis & Son” in 1953, set a precedent for growth, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the community.
Resilience and Expansion
Through times of joy and hardship, the Tevis legacy flourished. The sudden passing of Stan Jr. in 1974 saw the mantle of leadership gracefully taken up by Dorothy Tevis and Stanley H. Tevis III (Jack). Under their guidance, the company not only preserved its foundational values but also expanded its reach and services, now boasting over 200 employees and serving more than 35,000 customers in heating oil, propane, and HVAC solutions.

1980 marked a pivotal year with the inception of Modern Comfort Systems, a subsidiary dedicated to heating and air conditioning services. Under the leadership of C. Nevin Haines and the support of a robust 15,000 square foot facility in Westminster, we have not only met but exceeded the expectations of our customers. Our facility, a hub of excellence, houses an advanced training facility, a modern showroom, and a dedicated customer service operation committed to your comfort and satisfaction.

Our journey, however, extends beyond comfort solutions. From launching our first convenience store and gas station combo in 1981 to embracing the world of home security in 2009 with Modern Comfort Security Systems, our trajectory has been one of relentless progress and diversification.
